The beauty industry has long had an unsolved waste problem emanating from the use of plastic. For a product that would last a few weeks or, at best, months; its plastic packaging would hang around forever, leaving behind a cavernous carbon footprint and ending up in landfills, rivers, and oceans.

It’s estimated that the global beauty industry produces more than 120 billion units of packaging each year, and it accounts for 70% of the industry’s waste. The UN Environment Programme states that if current levels of consumption continue, there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfill. That’s equivalent to 35,000 Empire State Buildings, for reference. This is largely due to the use-and-dispose model of consumption when it comes to beauty and skincare products.

Sustainable practices are a touchstone at Herbaria

Being firm believers in sustainable skincare that does as good for the skin as for the planet, we resolved to concoct effective skincare that doesn’t leave a trail of single-use plastic behind. After years of research, we came up with a line of products that are vegan, cruelty-free and plastic-free down to its packaging, and crafted meticulously with the best of natural ingredients.

Eco conscious ingredients

Herbaria’s products, staying true to its name, teleport you closer to nature by bringing you a small part of it with the real pressed flowers in the bottle. The FSSAI certified vivid colours and pthalete free certified fragrances soothe your senses while the potent ingredients work to nourish, nurture, and protect your skin.

Our products are formulated without the use of microbeads, which are usually used for exfoliation. Instead, we turned to natural alternatives like cellulose beads, fruit seeds, shells, flowers, and herbs.

Packaging that puts the planet first

At Herbaria, we have done away with single-use plastic containers and designed sturdy glass jars that can be put to use again and again over a long term. Glass packaging is a highly recyclable material, and it can be recycled infinitely without losing its quality. In contrast, plastic often has very limited recycling capabilities and often end up in landfill only to be eliminated by a process called 'Photodegradation' that takes an average of 110yrs to break down a single plastic molecule.

Based on industry estimates, transitioning to glass packaging from plastic packaging
we aim to save anywhere between 30%-60% of plastic footprint.

Eco-friendly luxury; now in a refill pack

The myth of recycling is finally making it to the front page news and it turns out not everything we put diligently in the green bin gets transformed into something new. Only around nine per cent of the world’s plastic scrap actually ends up being recycled because recycling is highly dependent on an individual's choice and available infrastructure in place.

According to an independent centre for studying the environmental impact of packaging, choosing a refill instead of a new product saves 70 percent CO2, 40 percent water and 65 percent energy. For an industry like cosmetics, which creates 120 million units of packaging each year, refillable products are a blessing.

Our sustainable partnerships

Herbaria is Certified Plastic Neutral Brand

With our sustainable partnerships we have achieved a 97% plastic-free ecosystem. Though we have miles to go in the journey to be plastic-free, but our sustainability parameters are the first step, and we believe that together we can make a difference.

Our one-of-a-kind refilling module is devised to ensure we shrink down plastic use further. And whatever plastic we end up using due to the lack of sustainable alternatives, we offset by recycling five times that amount in collaboration with The Disposal Company.
